The Grenada Medical and Dental Council applauds the men and women whose life’s ambition is focused on healing and prolonging the lives of their fellow human beings. We are cognizant of the high levels of sacrifice and dedication required to successfully complete the rigors of medical education. We are committed to take all steps necessary to meet our responsibilities as Grenada’s accrediting body for medical programmes operating in our country, including maintaining our rigorous standards and policies to ensure graduates of programmes we accredit are well-prepared for the challenges of the medical profession.
Starting in 2024, individuals applying for ECFMG Certification, which is required for international medical graduates to enter graduate medical education (GME) in the United States, must be a student or graduate of a medical school that is accredited by an accrediting agency that is officially recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Because the WFME Recognition Programme is the only program for the recognition of medical school accrediting agencies accepted by ECFMG at this time, beginning in 2024 medical schools will need to be accredited by a WFME-recognized accrediting agency in order for their students and graduates to be eligible for ECFMG Certification. More information about the 2024 changes can be found here.
Accordingly, GMDC is taking the necessary steps to be recognized by WFME well ahead of 2024. GMDC has already applied to WFME to start the recognition process and can report some very positive progress.
GMDC filed its initial application for WFME recognition in April 2020. By letter dated October 31, 2020, WFME notified GMDC that it is “eligible for the WFME Recognition of Accreditation Programme” and GMDC can proceed with its application. See WFME letter to GMDC here.
GMDC is actively working on completing the comprehensive recognition application (parts B - D) and plans to file the application and related documentation in the coming months to allow ample time for the WFME review. Based on our correspondence, WFME has placed GMDC on its tentative agenda for site visits in the spring of 2022, well ahead of the 2024 date for ECFMG recognition.
GMDC is in regular contact with WFME and is positioned to receive a determination on its recognition by WFME well in advance of 2024.
